Interpretation 2: Walter Sickert’s The Camden Town Murder


Another painting with two opposite titles. Another painting that intrigued me. This was painted by Walter Sickert. Just like Interior by Edgar Degas which I discussed in my previous post, this painting also has a neutral title: What Shall We Do for The Rent? However, if the man’s thoughtful expression connotes his worries about his financial situation, why the woman was depicted lying in bed naked? Did the picture really try to capture the notorious murder case? Yet, the way I see it, the picture does not show any aggressiveness…only sadness and regrets maybe?
